How important are recipes?

For me a recipe is just a starting point. When I find a good recipe I follow it to the letter. If it's good I will then get creative and make my own version or versions until I get what I consider a better recipe/recipes. In fact there are many variations of one recipe that can produce several different meals. The great thing about cooking is that you can get as creative as you like, there are no limits.
