Herbs and Spices
Cooking without herbs and spices would make eating a lot less interesting. Although we take for granted those jars of leaves, bark, berries and roots in the pantry, they connect us with the flavors of distant lands. There was even a time when spices were precious currency: pepper-so commonly available today-was literally worth its weight in gold due to its rarity in the days when importing it meant caravans and lengthy sea voyages.
