Hearty Macroni and Cheese

This not your traditional Macroni and Cheese recipe. It's so much better.

1 pkg (in the tube) sausage
1 16-oz pkg medium shell macaroni
12 oz Velveeta Cheese
1-1/2 cups milk
1/4 cup onion
5 slices bread

Cook shells as directed and drain. Place in a 2-quart baking dish.
Saute sausage. When sausage is almost done, add diced onions. Mix with shells.
In a separate pan on low to med heat, mix milk and cheese (sliced or cubed). Using a whisk, stir until cheese is melted, about 10 minutes.
Pour over shells and sausage. Mix together.
Toast bread lightly and cut into cubes. Layer over casserole.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes.
This is a meal in itself..
